On behalf of the MSMA Executive Committee, I am delighted to share with you the CME programme for the 40th MSMA Ruby Anniversary Meeting.
The CME programme has been a traditional highlight of the annual meeting on the Sunday and this year is no exception. We have a line up of exciting speakers who are speaking to a variety of topics of interest to us all.

About the 40th MSMA Ruby Anniversary CME Programme
We are proud to host an array of distinguished speakers and share groundbreaking knowledge on medical advancements.

Athimalaipet V. Ramanan
FMedSci
Professor Ramanan (Ram to his friends and colleagues) is a consultant pediatric rheumatologist at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children. He is the joint lead for research (Division of Women and Children) at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, and Professor of Paediatric Rheumatology at the University of Bristol. He was elected Fellow of Academy of Medical Sciences UK in 2023.
Professor Ramanan is a medical advisor for Olivia’s Vision. He was awarded the British Society of Rheumatology’s Innovation in Clinical Practice Award in 2010. He was also awarded the University of Bristol Vice Chancellor’s Health Impact award in 2017 and Royal College of Physicians/NIHR CRN Award for outstanding contribution to research in 2018.
Professor Ramanan’s has published >275 articles and numerous book chapters covering a variety of topics in the field of rheumatology. He is the Co-Editor of Rheumatology and Associate Editor for the Archives of Diseases in Childhood.
He is one of the Editors of 5th Edition of Oxford Textbook of Rheumatology.
He has also led pivotal trials of Tocilizumab and Baricitinib in COVID-19 and part of the paediatric steering committee of the RECOVERY trial.

Dr. Gomathi Margabanthu
Dr. Margabanthu is a passionate paediatrician with an interest in Diabetes and endocrinology. She is Deputy Medical Director NHSE Midlands, Director of Professional Standards and Deputy Medical Director for ULTH. She is also clinical lead for CYP diabetes for midlands.

Ms Premila Kollipara
MD FRCOG MFFP
Ms Kollipara is one of the founding members of the MSMA. She has worked for more than four decades in the NHS. She is a Consultant at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust in Essex. Having previously headed the Obstetric department at the Trust for many years.
She started her career in the UK in 1979 at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne. Her special clinical interests include early pregnancy problems and vaginal surgery. Her research interests include the effect of polycystic ovarian diseases on women’s health.
Having trained many of the younger audience, she is passionate about teaching and in recognition was awarded the Top Teacher Award for three consecutive years from University College London.

Dr. Prabakar Dharmeswaran
- Graduated from Stanley Medical College in 1995.
- Post-graduation in Anaesthesia from Madurai Medical College in 2000.
- Moved to the UK in 2001 for further training.
- Fellowship from Irish college in 2006.
- Specialist Registrar rotation in Warwickshire school of anaesthesia from 2004 to 2009.
- Took a year out – Out Of Programme Experience (OOPE) – as Visiting Assistant Professor and Attending Anaesthesiologist in University of Washington, Seattle, USA in 2008.
- Consultant Anaesthetist in the UK since 2009 with special interest in Trauma, Airway and Teaching and Education.
- In New Cross Hospital, Wolverhampton since 2011 – served tenure as Trauma Lead and Clinical Services Lead in the past.
Currently:
- Mental health first aider
- Professional wellbeing lead for the Trust and
- Professor of Practice in Nitte University, Mangalore, India.
Personal interests: blogger, youtuber, world traveller and fitness enthusiast.

Mr Sridhar Rathinam
FRCSEd(CSiG), FRCSEd(CTh), FFSTEd
Sridhar Rathinam is a Consultant Thoracic Surgeon and Head of service in the University Hospitals of Leicester with a special interest in parenchyma preserving oncological lung resections, chest wall surgery, minimally invasive lung resections and surgery for emphysema.
He qualified and underwent General Surgical Training at the Madras Medical College and General Hospital [FRCSEd (CSiG )2000]. He continued cardiothoracic training in the UK on the British Council Fellowship and underwent higher surgical training in Cardiothoracics with a focus on thoracic surgery in the West Midlands Cardiothoracic Training programme [FRCSEd (CTh) 2006] in Birmingham. He underwent a period of research studying the Proteomics in Lung Cancer at the University of Birmingham.
He was appointed as a Consultant Thoracic Surgeon in Leicester in 2009 and Honorary Senior Lecturer in University of Leicester in 2017.
He is a keen surgical trainer and a faculty member in national and international cardiothoracic courses. He is actively involved in the assessment and quality assurance of surgical training being a member of the Specialty Advisory Committee. He is a National Selection Panellist for trainee appointment in cardiothoracic surgery and Core surgical training. He is an examiner for the Intercollegiate Speciality Board Examination in Cardiothoracic surgery & European Board in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
He was the Training Programme Director and Chair of the East Midlands Cardiothoracic Training Programme. He was elected to the Fellowship of Faculty of Surgical Trainers and Honorary Overseas Fellowship of Indian Association of Cardiac, vascular and Thoracic surgeons.
He is the Communication secretary for Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery for Great Britain and Ireland (SCTS), The Chair of the Intercollegiate Specialty Board Examinations (CTh) and Ex-Chair of Cardiothoracic Surgical specialty Board, for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He was the Simulation Lead and Quality Assurance Lead for the Specialist Advisory Committee (SAC).
As SCTS Thoracic Surgery Tutor (2013-16), he has co-developed an innovative portfolio of 12 structured simulation-based courses, which mirror the ISCP curriculum and are provided free of charge which is the first of its kind in the world. As Education Secretary, SCTS (2017- 2022) he oversaw the provision of education to all members of SCTS. He is a keen advocate on web based solutions for surgical education to disseminate surgical wisdom.
His research interests include Lung cancer proteomics(SELDI) and biomarker (TRACER-X), Lung Volume Reduction Surgery , Thoracotomy pain, Perioperative care and is Local Principal investigator for NIHR trials like CELEB, HARP2, TOPIC2, MURRAY and Fit4Surg.
He has presented and published many articles and book chapters.

Nupur Agarwal
Nupur is a qualified dentist who now works in the field of Mind Body Medicine. She is a Health and Wellbeing Expert specialising in Clinical Mindfulness, Medical hypnotherapy, EMDR and other modalities.
For over a decade, she trained and worked in hospitals across India. Early on in her career, Nupur was drawn towards the power of mind and its influence on health and wellbeing. Based on her extensive work with oro-facial conditions such as cancer, Nupur observed that diseases/conditions do not occur in isolation (and nor do their cure), there exists a vital link between what manifests at the level of the body and what goes on in the mind.
Passionate about the mind-body connection, Nupur believes science and spirituality are not separate from each other.
She has offered Mindfulness and clinical hypnotherapy to cancer patients at St. George’s Hospital, London UK over the past 7 years.
She has supported the highly stressed health care professionals through the pandemic by conducting Mindfulness and wellbeing sessions.
She has been supporting many Corporates globally through the pandemic with Mindfulness and Wellbeing workshops. She has also conducted Mindfulness sessions for Senior Leadership within organisations to help businesses adopt a growth mindset and integrate principles of Mindfulness and Compassion in their work culture.
Nupur has also conducted research pilots in the field of mind body medicine. She presented the findings of one of her research pilots in an international conference organised by British Association of Surgical Oncology, London where she won the first runners up prize for her paper presentation on: Quality improvement project (QIP) using Clinical Hypnotherapy (CH) in surgical head and neck cancer patients to improve quality of life (QoL).

She has also presented a clinical poster of her study titled: Case study of patient receiving Clinical Hypnotherapy and Mindfulness (CHAM) programme for a severely needle-phobic patient requiring bone marrow biopsy.
Her other research pilot on: Clinical hypnotherapy and Mindfulness to manage Peripheral Neuropathy in blood and lymphatic cancer patients, was successfully completed however not yet published.
Nupur works in multiple formats, including 1:1 coaching sessions and group workshops either in person or virtually over the internet.
